NIAMRRE Welcomes US Biologic to Strengthen Antimicrobial Resistance Prevention Solutions
AMES, IOWA (September 10, 2021) — The National Institute of Antimicrobial Resistance Research and Education (NIAMRRE) today announced US Biologic, a leading oral vaccine and therapeutic delivery company, as a new member.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacterial or fungal pathogens change and cause antibiotics to stop effectively treating diseases. According to the CDC, antibiotic-resistant bacteria cause at least 2.8 million infections and 35,000 deaths in the United States each year.
“By joining NIAMRRE, US Biologic solidifies its commitment to improving animal and human health,” said Dr. Paul Plummer, executive director of NIAMRRE. “Strategies to prevent infection and reduce the need for antibiotics through effective alternatives will allow us to preserve the ability for future generations to use these lifesaving tools.”
US Biologic, in partnership with institutions such as the USDA Agricultural Research Service and the University of Edinburgh’s Supporting Evidence Based Interventions program, is developing alternatives to antibiotics for the agriculture industry, including a series of oral vaccines and biologics to reduce the threat of diseases in food animals (aquaculture, livestock, and poultry). These safe, effective, and economical solutions can help limit the spread of diseases, while decreasing the use of antibiotics.
“AMR is a One Health issue. How do we achieve the best health for people, animals, plants, and the environment? US Biologic will help us solve this question as they collaborate with NIAMRRE researchers and other industry members to discover preventative solutions around antibiotic use and stewardship,” said Dr. Plummer.
US Biologic joins NIAMRRE’s diverse membership roster, with members representing academic institutions, commodity groups, pharma and health organizations, retailers, nonprofits and member associations, and startup companies. Members are accepted year-round for organizations dedicated to advancing the One Health approach—a collaborative methodology to achieve optimal health outcomes between people, animals, plants, and their shared environment.
